Along with the introduction of the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras, Canon also announced four new lenses and two teleconverters for the EOS R full-frame mirrorless system. Three of these new lenses will be of particular interest to wildlife and sports photographers.
Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
First up is the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, a tele zoom that is likely to be a very popular model because of its versatile range. Paired with the RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM or RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM, you can cover a focal length range from 24mm to 500mm with just two lenses.
As an L-series lens, the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM features extensive weather sealing, and the Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to 5 stops of correction. The lens can focus as close as 3 feet. It’s also compatible with two new teleconverters introduced today, the Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x, for up to 1000mm of telephoto reach.
Canon Extender RF 1.4x (left) and Extender RF 2x (right).
The Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x will be available at the end of this month and priced at $499 and $599 respectively. The RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is expected in September with a list price of $2,699.
Arguably the most interesting lens announcements today are the Canon RF600mm F11 IS STM and RF800mm F11 IS STM. These lenses are fixed aperture, Diffractive Optics models, and while the single ƒ/11 aperture is a limitation, the trade-off gets you incredibly lightweight, compact and affordable super-tele lenses. Both feature a collapsible design that shrinks their length considerably for packing and extends when shooting.
The Canon RF600mm F11 IS STM (left) and RF800mm F11 IS STM (right) are remarkably compact and affordable.
The RF600mm weighs just 2 pounds and is 7.85 inches in length when retracted. The RF800mm weighs 2.8 pounds and is 11.1 inches in length when retracted. Compare that to Canon’s EF 600mm (6.7 pounds and 17.6 inches in length) and EF 800mm (18.1 inches, 9.9 pounds) primes—both of which are priced at $12,999—and the benefits of RF600mm and RF800mm, priced at just $699 and $899, are very intriguing, despite the fixed aperture. For wildlife photographers who have been priced out of the super-tele primes, this is a game changer. Availability is expected at the end of July.
Canon RF85mm F2 MACRO IS STM
Rounding out today’s lens introductions is a new macro, the RF85mm F2 MACRO IS STM. A popular focal length for macro work due to the working distance afforded, the lens is not a true 1:1 macro but does provide 0.5x magnification and a minimum focusing distance of 1.15 feet. It also has Optical Image Stabilization for up to 5 stops of correction with a Hybrid IS function that anticipates the correction needs for close-up work. It will be available in October for $599.
