Ever put things in front of your lens to achieve creative flares, bokeh, or other effects? I do all the time, particularly to create a sense of atmosphere and dream-like qualities to my images. Sometimes it’s a plastic bottle or crystals to experiment with.
The Lensbaby Omni came up with a system intended for exactly this purpose! First, you attach a ring to the front of your lens. Then, using magnets you can attach and position a wide range of lens flare tools and filters. This system is fabulous because not only have they worked out the more effective tools, but it also allows you to be hands-free and work with multiple effects at once.
In this shoot, I used the Canon EOS R5 and RF 50mm 1.2 lens. I illuminated my subject solely the ambient light coming from the billboards in Time Square. Using the backlight in the scene helped to amplify the effects of the filters for some really surreal and exaggerated results.
Thereof my favorite tools include the stretch glass, prism/crystal, and the color plastic tools… all of which I demo in this video!
The Omni system has a few different packs and expansions (Color Expansion, Flare Expansion, Crystal Expansion packs) to provide even more choices for creative tools. Or you can just go for the deluxe system that has them all!
