Portrait Photography With the Fujifilm 50mm f/1.0

Home Gear

The newest addition to the Fujifilm lens lineup is an interesting, though expensive lens. Coming in at just under $1,500, does its image quality hold up to such a premium price?

The Fujifilm 50mm f/1.0 is Fuji’s first f/1.0 lens, and it has autofocus, unlike the Nikon Noct lens. This video from The Camera Store TV gives a fantastic rundown of how the lens performs for portraits. In short: it’s sharp, with beautiful bokeh, but heavy. The lens seems to perform extremely well in backlit conditions like family photos, and the beautiful sample images from Evelyn really show just how sharp this lens can be.

According to Evelyn, the autofocus is not particularly fast, however, so don’t go taking this lens to the race track or a ball game. Keep it more for posed shots where you can take a breath and take your time, rather than more candid photos where it may have some trouble acquiring focus.

Overall, the lens seems to be a great addition to someone’s kit, providing they don’t have the similar 56mm f/1.2. What do you think? Will you be picking up one of these lenses when they are available? Sound off in the comments below!
